Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Csound up to 5.16.1. This vulnerability affects the function getnum. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in Csound before 5.16.6 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) hetro file to the getnum function in util/heti_main.c or (2) PVOC file to the getnum function in util/pv_import.c.
The weakness was disclosed 02/17/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at sourceforge.net. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0270 since 12/30/2011. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75805 (openSUSE Security Update : csound (openSUSE-SU-2012:0315-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165290 (SUSE Security Update for csound: Fixed Two Stack-Based Buffer Overflows (openSUSE-SU-2012:0315-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.16 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (73468), Exploit-DB (18710), Tenable (75805), SecurityFocus (BID 52144†) and Secunia (SA47585†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
