Linux Foundation cups-filters up to 1.0.50 os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Linux Foundation cups-filters up to 1.0.50 (Printing Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

cups-browsed in cups-filters 1.0.41 before 1.0.51 allows remote IPP printers to execute arbitrary commands via shell metacharacters in the (1) model or (2) PDL, related to "System V interface scripts generated for queues."

The weakness was presented 04/17/2014 by Sebastian Krahmer as Bug 1083326 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-2707 since 04/01/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be initiated within the local network. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 73539 (Fedora 20 : cups-filters-1.0.41-6.fc20 (2014-4708)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167968 (OpenSuSE Security Update for cups-filters (openSUSE-SU-2015:1244-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.42 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (92561), Tenable (73539), SecurityFocus (BID 66624†), Secunia (SA57530†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-44415†). See VDB-74472 for similar entry. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
