A vulnerability was found in Linuxfoundation cups-filters up to 1.0.64 (Printing Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function remove_bad_chars of the file utils/cups-browsed.c of the component Filters. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. The remove_bad_chars function in utils/cups-browsed.c in cups-filters before 1.0.66 allows remote IPP printers to execute arbitrary commands via consecutive shell metacharacters in the (1) model or (2) PDL. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-2707.
The weakness was disclosed 03/24/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at ubuntu.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2265 since 03/09/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83722 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : cups-filters (SUSE-SU-2015:0805-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167968 (OpenSuSE Security Update for cups-filters (openSUSE-SU-2015:1244-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.65 eliminates this vulnerability.
