Tweepy does not verify that the server hostname matches a domain name in the subject s Common Name (CN) or subjectAltName field of the X.509 certificate, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to spoof SSL servers via an arbitrary valid certificate, related to use of the Python httplib library.
The weakness was disclosed 11/14/2012 as 349780 as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared at freecode.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Horde. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-5825 since 11/04/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
