html/parser/XSSAuditor.cpp in WebCore in WebKit, as used in Google Chrome through 22 and Safari 5.1.7, does not consider all possible output contexts of reflected data, which makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass a cross-site scripting (XSS) protection mechanism via a crafted string, aka rdar problem 12019108.

The weakness was shared 08/02/2012 by Tushar Dalvi with Foundstone Labs as 92692 as not defined changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.webkit.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5851 since 11/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
