Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Cobblerd Cobbler up to 2.6.0. This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
Absolute path traversal vulnerability in the web interface in Cobbler 2.4.x through 2.6.x allows remote authenticated users to read arbitrary files via the Kickstart field in a profile.
The weakness was released 05/13/2014 by Dolev Farhi (Website). The advisory is shared at youtube.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3225 since 05/06/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Dolev Farhi and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76861 (Fedora 19 : cobbler-2.6.3-1.fc19 (2014-8545)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122465 (Fedora Security Update for cobbler (FEDORA-2014-8561)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (93033), Exploit-DB (33252), Tenable (76861), SecurityFocus (BID 67277†) and OSVDB (106759†). Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
