A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird 16.0.1/16.0.2 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. The texImage2D implementation in the WebGL subsystem in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 does not properly interact with Mesa drivers, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via function calls involving certain values of the level parameter.
The weakness was released 11/20/2012 by Peter Van der Beken (miaubiz) as MFSA 2012-106 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5833 since 11/05/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63005 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120702 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:1482)).
Upgrading to version 17.0 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at mozilla.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
