Use-after-free vulnerability in the nsTextEditorState::PrepareEditor function in Mozilla Firefox before 17.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, Thunderbird before 17.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.11, and SeaMonkey before 2.14 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption) via unspecified vectors, a different vulnerability than CVE-2012-5840.
The weakness was presented 11/20/2012 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2012-105 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-4214 since 08/08/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63005 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:1482)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
