A vulnerability was found in Wireshark up to 1.8.3 (Packet Analyzer Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality in the library ICMPv6. The manipulation as part of a CWD Command leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The weakness was presented 11/28/2012 by Laura Chappell with Wireshark as wnpa-sec-2012-40 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5602 since 10/24/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed in pcap File and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 49 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166686 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0238-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.12 or 1.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
