A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.8.3 (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects an unknown function of the component EIGRP dissector. The manipulation as part of a File leads to a denial of service vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-404. The weakness was shared 11/28/2012 by Laura Chappell with Wireshark as wnpa-sec-2012-34 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at wireshark.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5596 since 10/24/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in pcap File and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at wireshark.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 54 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166686 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for wireshark (SUSE-SU-2013:0238-1)).
Upgrading to version 1.6.12 or 1.8.4 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at wireshark.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
