Details
A vulnerability was found in OpenStack Compute up to 2014.1.1 (Cloud Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:
api/metadata/handler.py in OpenStack Compute (Nova) before 2013.2.4, 2014.x before 2014.1.2, and Juno before Juno-2, when proxying metadata requests through Neutron, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess instance ID signatures via a brute-force attack that relies on timing differences in responses to instance metadata requests.
The weakness was disclosed 08/07/2014 by Alex Gaynor (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3517 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80711 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : nova (cve_2014_3517_information_disclosure)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122747 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 3.4.1 Missing).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (94664), Tenable (80711), SecurityFocus (BID 68710†), OSVDB (109235†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-45933†). The entries VDB-11686, VDB-67944, VDB-68788 and VDB-68789 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
