Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in wp-includes/pluggable.php in WordPress before 3.9.2, when Multisite is enabled, allows remote authenticated administrators to inject arbitrary web script or HTML, and obtain Super Admin privileges, via a crafted avatar URL.
The weakness was shared 08/18/2014 by Nir Goldshlager (Alex) (Website). The advisory is available at wordpress.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-5240 since 08/14/2014. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122564 (Fedora Security Update for wordpress (FEDORA-2014-9270)).
Upgrading to version 3.7 eliminates this vulnerability.
