Details
A vulnerability was found in Nagios Core 3.4.3 (Log Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function process_cgivars of the file history.cgi. The manipulation of the argument host_name/scv_description with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple stack-based buffer overflows in the get_history function in history.cgi in Nagios Core before 3.4.4, and Icinga 1.6.x before 1.6.2, 1.7.x before 1.7.4, and 1.8.x before 1.8.4, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long (1) host_name variable (host parameter) or (2) svc_description variable.
The weakness was shared 12/09/2012 by temp66 as 1076350 as confirmed mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The public release happened without involvement of Nagios. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-6096 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by blasty and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at pastebin.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75020 (openSUSE Security Update : icinga (openSUSE-SU-2013:0169-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175245 (Debian Security Update for Nagios3 (DSA-2616)).
Upgrading to version 3.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
