Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, and Windows 7 Gold and SP1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) file name or (2) subfolder name that triggers use of unallocated memory as the destination of a copy operation, aka "Windows Filename Parsing Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was published 12/11/2012 by Lucas Apa with IOActive as MS12-081 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-4774 since 09/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63228 (MS12-081: Vulnerability in Windows File Handling Component Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2758857)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90847 (Windows File Handling Component Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-081)).
Applying the patch MS12-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12644.
