A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Microsoft Exchange 2007/2010 (Groupware Software). This issue affects some unknown functionality of the component RSS Feed Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 SP3 and 2010 SP1 and SP2 allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (Information Store service hang) by subscribing to a crafted RSS feed, aka "RSS Feed May Cause Exchange DoS Vulnerability."

The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was released 12/11/2012 with Microsoft as MS12-080 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4791 since 09/06/2012. The attack may be initiated remotely. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63227 (MS12-080: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2784126)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74262 (Microsoft Exchange Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-080)).

Applying the patch KB2746157/KB2787763/KB2785908 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
