Microsoft Word 2003 SP3, 2007 SP2 and SP3, and 2010 SP1; Word Viewer; Office Compatibility Pack SP2 and SP3; and Office Web Apps 2010 SP1 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via crafted RTF data, aka "Word RTF 'listoverridecount' Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was disclosed 12/12/2012 by SecuriTeam with SecuriTeam Secure Disclosure as MS12-079 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-2539 since 05/09/2012. The exploitability is told to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Apply updates per vendor instructions.Applying the patch MS12-079 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12683.
