The OpenType Font (OTF) driver in the kernel-mode drivers in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP2, Windows Server 2008 SP2, R2, and R2 SP1, Windows 7 Gold and SP1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012, and Windows RT allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted OpenType font file, aka "OpenType Font Parsing Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was presented 12/11/2012 by Eetu Loudemaa and Joni Vähämäki with Documill as MS12-078 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-2556 since 05/09/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63225 (MS12-078: Vulnerability in Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2783534)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90848 (Microsoft Windows Kernel-Mode Drivers Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS12-078)).
Applying the patch MS12-078 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12680.
