A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9/10 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function InjectHTMLStream of the component Object Ref Counting. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and 10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to an object that (1) was not properly initialized or (2) is deleted, aka "Improper Ref Counting Use After Free Vulnerability."
The bug was discovered 12/11/2012. The weakness was shared 12/11/2012 by Fermin J. Serna with Google Security Team as MS12-077 as confirmed bulletin (Microsoft Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-4787 since 09/06/2012. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
The exploit is available at zhodiac.hispahack.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4282 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63224 (MS12-077: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2761465)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100130 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS12-077)).
Applying the patch MS12-077 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12678.
