GNU Bash up to 3.2.48 mod_cgi os command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in GNU Bash. The affected element is an unknown function of the component mod_cgi. Such manipulation leads to os command injection. This vulnerability is listed as CVE-2014-7169. In addition, an exploit is available. You should upgrade the affected component.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in GNU Bash and classified as very critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component mod_cgi. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

GNU Bash through 4.3 bash43-025 processes trailing strings after certain malformed function definitions in the values of environment variables, which allows remote attackers to write to files or possibly have unknown other impact via a crafted environment, as demonstrated by vectors involving the ForceCommand feature in OpenSSH sshd, the mod_cgi and mod_cgid modules in the Apache HTTP Server, scripts executed by unspecified DHCP clients, and other situations in which setting the environment occurs across a privilege boundary from Bash execution. NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2014-6271.

The weakness was presented 09/24/2014 by Huzaifa S. Sidhpurwala (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-7169. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 04/22/2026). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

A public exploit has been developed by hobbily plunt and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77886 (GLSA-201409-10 : Bash: Code Injection (Updated fix for GLSA 201409-09)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350825 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for bash: AL2012-2014-006 (ShellShock)). This issue was added on 01/28/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 07/28/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 22 hours after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 31975. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16808.
