A vulnerability has been found in Linux Foundation Xen (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function x86_emulate of the component Kernel Mode. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-264. The x86_emulate function in arch/x86/x86_emulate/x86_emulate.c in Xen 4.4.x and earlier does not properly check supervisor mode permissions, which allows local HVM users to cause a denial of service (guest crash) or gain guest kernel mode privileges via vectors involving an (1) HLT, (2) LGDT, (3) LIDT, or (4) LMSW instruction.
The weakness was published 10/02/2014 by Andrei Lutas with BitDefender as XSA-105 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is available at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-7155 since 09/24/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79542 (OracleVM 3.2 : xen (OVMSA-2014-0026)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370032 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX200218)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
