Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 x2APIC Emulation resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Foundation Xen up to 4.4.1 (Virtualization Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component x2APIC Emulation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was shared 10/01/2014 by Jan Beulich with SuSE as XSA-108 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-7188 since 09/26/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 02/21/2022). Due to its background and reception, this vulnerability has a historic impact. The advisory points out:

The MSR range specified for APIC use in the x2APIC access model spans 256 MSRs. Hypervisor code emulating read and write accesses to these MSRs erroneously covered 1024 MSRs. While the write emulation path is written such that accesses to the extra MSRs would not have any bad effect (they end up being no-ops), the read path would (attempt to) access memory beyond the single page set up for APIC emulation.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78102 (Fedora 21 : xen-4.4.1-6.fc21 (2014-12002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370032 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX200218)).

Applying the patch xsa108.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at xenbits.xen.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96785), Tenable (78102), SecurityFocus (BID 70198†), Secunia (SA61664†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1030936†). The entries VDB-67681, VDB-67682, VDB-71771 and VDB-71770 are related to this item. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
