Node.js 0.10.18 qs Module resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Node.js 0.10.18 (JavaScript Library). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component qs Module. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The qs module before 1.0.0 in Node.js does not call the compact function for array data, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) by using a large index value to create a sparse array.

The weakness was presented 09/30/2014 by Dustin Shiver as qs Denial-of-Service Extended Event Loop Blocking as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at nodesecurity.io. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-7191 since 09/26/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. The advisory points out:

The qs module does not have an option or default for specifying object depth and when parsing a string representing a deeply nested object will block the event loop for long periods of time. An attacker could leverage this to cause a temporary denial-of-service condition, for example, in a web application, other requests would not be processed while this blocking is occurring.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78048 (Fedora 20 : nodejs-qs-0.6.6-3.fc20 (2014-11376)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (96729), Tenable (78048), SecurityFocus (BID 70113†), Secunia (SA60026†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-46720†). openwall.com is providing further details.
