Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the file cachemgr.cgi of the component tools/cachemgr.cc. Multiple memory leaks in tools/cachemgr.cc in cachemgr.cgi in Squid 2.x and 3.x before 3.1.22, 3.2.x before 3.2.4, and 3.3.x before 3.3.0.2 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via (1) invalid Content-Length headers, (2) long POST requests, or (3) crafted authentication credentials.
The weakness was presented 12/17/2012 with Coverity Scan as SQUID-2012_1 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at squid-cache.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-5643 since 10/24/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a private exploit are known.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75011 (openSUSE Security Update : squid3 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0162-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169027 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for squid3 (SUSE-SU-2016:1996-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.3.0.2, 3.2.4 or 3.1.22 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at squid-cache.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13303.
