A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SonicWALL SonicOS 5.8.1.8 (Firewall Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the file appFirewallObjects.html. The manipulation of the argument inputxml with the input value <dbInfo>… leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
The weakness was shared 12/18/2012 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri with Vulnerability Research Laboratory as confirmed mailinglist post (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
A public exploit has been developed by Benjamin Kunz Mejri in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 14 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:appFirewallObjects.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version 5.8.1.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
