The (1) Zend_Feed_Rss and (2) Zend_Feed_Atom classes in Zend_Feed in Zend Framework 1.11.x before 1.11.15 and 1.12.x before 1.12.1 allow remote attackers to read arbitrary files, send HTTP requests to intranet servers, and possibly cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via an XML External Entity (XXE) attack.
The bug was discovered 12/18/2012. The weakness was released 12/18/2012 by Yury Dyachenko with Positive Research Center as ZF2012-05 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at framework.zend.com. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5657 since 10/24/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69712 (Amazon Linux AMI : php-ZendFramework (ALAS-2013-153)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175414 (Debian Security Update for zendframework (DSA 3265-2)).
Upgrading to version 1.11.15 or 1.12.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at framework.zend.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
