A vulnerability was found in Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform 6 EL4 (Application Server Software) and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function processInvocation of the component mod_negotiation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (aka JBoss EAP or JBEAP) before 6.0.1, when using role-based authorization for Enterprise Java Beans (EJB) access, does not call the intended authorization modules, which prevents JACC permissions from being applied and allows remote attackers to obtain access to the EJB.
The weakness was disclosed 12/18/2012 by Josef Cacek with Red Hat JBoss EAP Quality Engineering Team as 870871 as confirmed changelog entry (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Red Hat. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-4550 since 01/24/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 50 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64071 (RHEL 5 : JBoss EAP (RHSA-2012:1591)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 6.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at redhat.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
