Details
A vulnerability was found in BMC Track-It! 11.3.0.355. It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a missing authentication vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-306. The product does not perform any authentication for functionality that requires a provable user identity or consumes a significant amount of resources. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
BMC Track-It! 11.3.0.355 does not require authentication on TCP port 9010, which allows remote attackers to upload arbitrary files, execute arbitrary code, or obtain sensitive credential and configuration information via a .NET Remoting request to (1) FileStorageService or (2) ConfigurationService.
The weakness was released 10/10/2014 by Pedro Ribeiro with Agile Information Security as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-4872 since 07/10/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Pedro Ribeiro in Ruby and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122726 (BMC Track-It! Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19292.
