Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 through 8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web site that triggers access to an object that (1) was not properly allocated or (2) is deleted, as demonstrated by a CDwnBindInfo object, and exploited in the wild in December 2012.
The bug was discovered 12/26/2012. The weakness was disclosed 12/27/2012 by Bill Gertz with 0-day as Chinese Hackers Suspected in Cyber Attack on Council on Foreign Relations as confirmed article (Website) via Washington Free Beacon. It is possible to read the advisory at freebeacon.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2012-4792 since 09/06/2012. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100134 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-008 and KB2794220)). The IE zero-day flaw first came to light after report surfaced that the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) had been hacked. A closer look by security firm FireEye led to the discovery that the CFR site had been compromised and was hosting malicious content as early as on December 21. Through Malware Protection Cloud, FireEye could confirm that the website was compromised as early as Friday, December 21. A similar Internet Explorer vulnerability was behind the major Aurora cyber attack on Google and other U.S. corporations that began in 2009 and was traced to China’s government.The CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog lists this issue since 07/23/2024 with a due date of 08/13/2024:
The impacted product is end-of-life and should be disconnected if still in use. Upgrading to version 9 or 10 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at windows.microsoft.com. Applying the patch Fix It 50971 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at blogs.technet.com. The problem might be mitigated by replacing the product with Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Opera as an alternative. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The article contains the following remark:

People using Internet Explorer 9-10 are not impacted.Microsoft made a Fix It available for the unpatched vulnerability. A Fix It is not a patch, but an easy method to apply workaround configuration changes. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12710.
