Multiple buffer overflows in VideoLAN VLC media player 2.0.4 and earlier allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and execute arbitrary code via vectors related to the (1) freetype renderer and (2) HTML subtitle parser.

The weakness was presented 12/15/2012 with VideoLAN as VLC 2.0.5 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at videolan.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-1868 since 02/19/2013. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 76417 (Debian DSA-2973-1 : vlc - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122478 (VLC Media Player HTML Subtitle and Freetype Renderer Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 2.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at videolan.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
