A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in SonicWALL Email Security 7.4.1.x (Anti-Malware Software). This issue affects an unknown code block of the file settings_host_config.html of the component System Command Handler. The manipulation of the argument Command Exception Handling with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was shared 12/28/2012 by Benjamin Kunz Mejri with Vulnerability Research Laboratory as 768 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vulnerability-lab.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Benjamin Kunz Mejri in HTML/Javascript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at packetstormsecurity.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 27 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:settings_host_config.html it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.

Upgrading to version 7.4.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
