Adobe ColdFusion 9.0, 9.0.1, and 9.0.2, when a password is not configured, allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and possibly execute arbitrary code via unspecified vectors, as exploited in the wild in January 2013.

The weakness was published 01/04/2013 as APSA13-01 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at adobe.com. The vendor was not involved in the public release. This vulnerability has been discovered in the wild. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0625 since 12/18/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1552 according to MITRE ATT&CK. OSVDB documents: "This vulnerability is only present when password protection has not been enabled or no password is set."

A public exploit has been developed by metasploit in Ruby and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at dev.metasploit.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66526 (Adobe ColdFusion Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB13-03) (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120771 (Adobe ColdFusion Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSA13-01, APSB13-03)). Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at helpx.adobe.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
