A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Adobe ColdFusion 9.0/9.0.1/9.0.2/10.0 (Programming Language Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the file administrator.cfc of the component Remote Development Services. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. administrator.cfc in Adobe ColdFusion 9.0, 9.0.1, 9.0.2, and 10 allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and possibly execute arbitrary code by logging in to the RDS component using the default empty password and leveraging this session to access the administrative web interface, as exploited in the wild in January 2013.
The weakness was presented 01/11/2013 by Will Fuller and Scott Buckel with Corporate Zen as APSA13-01 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is available at adobe.com. The vendor was not involved in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0632 since 12/18/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by metasploit in Ruby and been published 4 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at dev.metasploit.com. It is declared as attacked. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64689 (Adobe ColdFusion Authentication Bypass (APSB13-03)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120771 (Adobe ColdFusion Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSA13-01, APSB13-03)). This issue was added on 03/03/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 03/24/2022:
Apply updates per vendor instructions.Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at helpx.adobe.com. It is possible to mitigate the problem by adding an authentication mechanism. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be adding authentication. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12891.
