Use-after-free vulnerability in Google Chrome before 24.0.1312.52 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly have unspecified other impact via vectors related to SVG layout.
The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2013 by Atte Kettunen (Inferno) with Oulu University Secure Programming Group as 162494 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Google. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-5145 since 09/24/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75155 (openSUSE Security Update : chromium (openSUSE-SU-2013:0236-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166158 (SUSE Security Update for Chromium (openSUSE-SU-2013:0236-1)).
Upgrading to version 24.0.1312.52 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
