CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in ProFTPD up to 1.3.4 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component MKD/XMKD Command Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

ProFTPD before 1.3.5rc1, when using the UserOwner directive, allows local users to modify the ownership of arbitrary files via a race condition and a symlink attack on the (1) MKD or (2) XMKD commands.

The weakness was shared 11/08/2012 by TJ Saunders as Bug 3841 as not defined bug report (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugs.proftpd.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-6095 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by TJ Saunders in Shell-Skript and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at bugs.proftpd.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66970 (ProFTPD FTP Command Handling Symlink Arbitrary File Overwrite), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP and running in the context r. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121476 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.3.5rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch mkdir-bug3841.patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at bugs.proftpd.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (66970), SecurityFocus (BID 57172†) and Secunia (SA51761†). The entry VDB-7456 is related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
