ProFTPD up to 1.3.4 MKD/XMKD race condition

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in ProFTPD up to 1.3.4 (File Transfer Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the component FTPD. The manipulation of the argument MKD/XMKD with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

ProFTPD before 1.3.5rc1, when using the UserOwner directive, allows local users to modify the ownership of arbitrary files via a race condition and a symlink attack on the (1) MKD or (2) XMKD commands.

The weakness was released 01/04/2013 by Jann Horn as Bug 3765 as confirmed changelog entry (Website). The advisory is shared for download at proftpd.org. The public release was coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-6095 since 12/06/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 66970 (ProFTPD FTP Command Handling Symlink Arbitrary File Overwrite), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FTP. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121476 (Solaris 11.1 Support Repository Update (SRU) 11.4.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.3.5rc1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (66970), SecurityFocus (BID 57172†), Secunia (SA51823†), SecurityTracker (ID 1028040†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-38219†). Entry connected to this vulnerability is available at VDB-7244. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
