Details
A vulnerability was found in Zoho ManageEngine Desktop Central (Endpoint Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component Uploader. The manipulation of the argument fileName with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in ZOHO ManageEngine Desktop Central (DC) before 9 build 90055 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a .. (dot dot) in the fileName parameter to mdm/mdmLogUploader.
The weakness was published 10/21/2014 by Pedro Ribeiro (Website). The advisory is shared at raw.githubusercontent.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5006 since 07/18/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 64 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82078 (ManageEngine Desktop Central statusUpdate Arbitrary File Upload RCE (intrusive check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.
Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 16589.
