Zoho ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer 9.0 Upload Servlet path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Zoho ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer 9.0. It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown functionality of the component Upload Servlet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Directory traversal vulnerability in the agentUpload servlet in ZOHO ManageEngine EventLog Analyzer 9.0 build 9002 and 8.2 build 8020 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by uploading a ZIP file which contains an executable file with .. (dot dot) sequences in its name, then accessing the executable via a direct request to the file under the web root.

The weakness was disclosed 10/26/2014 by Andrea Micalizzi (rgod) (Website). The advisory is shared at mogwaisecurity.de. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-6037 since 09/01/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityFocus (BID 69482†) and OSVDB (110642†). The entry VDB-71215 is pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
