The weakness was released 01/08/2013 by Sviatoslav Chagaev (miaubiz) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MFSA 2013-03 as confirmed posting (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated with Mozilla. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0768 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63463 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (a4ed6632-5aa9-11e2-8fcb-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166684 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for MozillaFirefox (SUSE-SU-2013:0292-1)).
Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
