Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.2.10 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component JSON Parameter Par. The manipulation of the argument JSON with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
Ruby on Rails 3.0.x before 3.0.19, 3.1.x before 3.1.10, and 3.2.x before 3.2.11 does not properly consider differences in parameter handling between the Active Record component and the JSON implementation, which allows remote attackers to bypass intended database-query restrictions and perform NULL checks or trigger missing WHERE clauses via a crafted request, as demonstrated by certain "[nil]" values, a related issue to CVE-2012-2660 and CVE-2012-2694.
The weakness was presented 01/08/2013 by aaron as confirmed posting (Website). The advisory is shared for download at isc.sans.edu. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0155 since 12/06/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
After before and not just, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at blog.phusion.nl. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 5 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75237 (openSUSE Security Update : rubygem-actionpack-3_2 (openSUSE-SU-2013:1906-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121907 (Fedora Security Update for rubygem-actionpack (FEDORA-2013-2363)).
