Use-after-free vulnerability in the obj_toSource function in Mozilla Firefox before 18.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.2, Thunderbird before 17.0.2, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 2.15 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted web page referencing JavaScript Proxy objects that are not properly handled during garbage collection.

The weakness was disclosed 01/08/2013 by Sviatoslav Chagaev (regenrecht) with Zero Day Initiative (ZDI) as MFSA 2013-19 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0756 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63463 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (a4ed6632-5aa9-11e2-8fcb-c8600054b392)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165833 (SUSE Security Update for Mozilla Januarys (openSUSE-SU-2013:0149-1)).

Upgrading to version 18.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12766.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (63463), SecurityFocus (BID 57185†), OSVDB (89024†), Secunia (SA51752†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1027955†). The entries VDB-7280, VDB-7281, VDB-7282 and VDB-7283 are pretty similar. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
