Details
A vulnerability has been found in XFree86 and X11 (Windowing System Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects the function __glXSeparableFilter2DReqSize of the component GLX Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in the GLX extension in XFree86 4.0, X.Org X Window System (aka X11 or X) X11R6.7, and X.Org Server (aka xserver and xorg-server) before 1.16.3 allow remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted request to the (1) __glXDisp_ReadPixels, (2) __glXDispSwap_ReadPixels, (3) __glXDisp_GetTexImage, (4) __glXDispSwap_GetTexImage, (5) GetSeparableFilter, (6) GetConvolutionFilter, (7) GetHistogram, (8) GetMinmax, (9) GetColorTable, (10) __glXGetAnswerBuffer, (11) __GLX_GET_ANSWER_BUFFER, (12) __glXMap1dReqSize, (13) __glXMap1fReqSize, (14) Map2Size, (15) __glXMap2dReqSize, (16) __glXMap2fReqSize, (17) __glXImageSize, or (18) __glXSeparableFilter2DReqSize function, which triggers an out-of-bounds read or write.
The weakness was shared 12/10/2014 by Ilja van Sprundel (Website). The advisory is available at x.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-8093 since 10/10/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79958 (FreeBSD : NVIDIA UNIX driver -- remote denial of service or arbitrary code execution (fdf72a0e-8371-11e4-bc20-001636d274f3)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350232 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for xorg-x11-server: ALAS-2015-470).
Upgrading to version 1.16.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99219), Tenable (79958), SecurityFocus (BID 71596†), Secunia (SA62292†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-51360†). The entries VDB-68379, VDB-68380, VDB-68412 and VDB-73184 are related to this item. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
