Docker up to 1.3.1 Registry input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability described as problematic has been identified in Docker up to 1.3.1. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Registry. The manipulation results in input validation. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-9358. No exploit is available. Upgrading the affected component is recommended.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Docker up to 1.3.1 (Virtualization Software). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Registry. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Docker before 1.3.3 does not properly validate image IDs, which allows remote attackers to conduct path traversal attacks and spoof repositories via a crafted image in a (1) "docker load" operation or (2) "registry communications."

The weakness was published 12/16/2014 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-9358 since 12/09/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 79875 (Amazon Linux AMI : docker (ALAS-2014-461)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350241 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for docker: ALAS-2014-461).

Upgrading to version 1.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99307), Tenable (79875), SecurityFocus (BID 71649†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-47849†). Similar entries are available at VDB-73259 and VDB-146506. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
