Details
A vulnerability has been found in Docker up to 1.3.2 (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Container Protection Mechanism. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Path traversal vulnerability in Docker before 1.3.3 allows remote attackers to write to arbitrary files and bypass a container protection mechanism via a full pathname in a symlink in an (1) image or (2) build in a Dockerfile.
The bug was discovered 12/11/2014. The weakness was released 12/02/2019 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2014-9356. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation.
