A vulnerability has been found in GNU Openswan up to 2.1.4 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function verify_x509cert. FreeS/WAN 1.x and 2.x, and other related products including superfreeswan 1.x, openswan 1.x before 1.0.6, openswan 2.x before 2.1.4, and strongSwan before 2.1.3, allows remote attackers to authenticate using spoofed PKCS#7 certificates in which a self-signed certificate identifies an alternate Certificate Authority (CA) and spoofed issuer and subject.
The bug was discovered 06/25/2004. The weakness was presented 06/25/2004 by Thomas Walpuski (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.netsys.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-0590 since 06/23/2004. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
