Symantec Enterprise Firewall/VPN Appliances 100, 200, and 200R running firmware before 1.63 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (device freeze) via a fast UDP port scan on the WAN interface.
The bug was discovered 09/22/2004. The weakness was disclosed 09/22/2004 by Mike Sues with Rigel Kent Security & Advisory Services (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at sarc.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-1472 since 02/13/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1499 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is possible to download the exploit at insecure.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 78045 (Symantec Enterprise Firewall/VPN Appliance Multiple Remote Vulnerabilities (SYM04-013)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at ftp.symantec.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
