A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Ettercap (Packet Analyzer Software). This issue affects the function dissector_postgresql of the component Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the dissector_postgresql function in dissectors/ec_postgresql.c in Ettercap before 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted password length value that is inconsistent with the actual length of the password.
The weakness was disclosed 12/19/2014 by Nick Sampanis (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at obrela.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-6395 since 09/15/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Nick Sampanis and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83443 (GLSA-201505-01 : Ettercap: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123460 (Fedora Security Update for ettercap (FEDORA-2015-4009)).
Upgrading to version 0.8.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
