A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Ettercap (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function dissector_postgresql of the component Dissector. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. The dissector_postgresql function in dissectors/ec_postgresql.c in Ettercap before 0.8.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted password length, which triggers a 0 character to be written to an arbitrary memory location.

The weakness was presented 12/19/2014 by Nick Sampanis (Website). The advisory is shared for download at obrela.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2014-6396 since 09/15/2014. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
