Details
A vulnerability has been found in GParted up to 14.0 and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Privileges. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
GParted before 0.15.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges via shell metacharacters in a crafted filesystem label.
The weakness was shared 12/19/2014 by W. Ettlinger with SEC Consult Vulnerability Lab as not defined mailinglist post (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2014-7208 since 09/27/2014. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by SEC Consult and been published 4 days after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80550 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : gparted vulnerability (USN-2471-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123507 (Solaris 11.2 Support Repository Update (SRU) 8.4.0 Missing).
Upgrading to version 14.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (99443), Exploit-DB (35595), Tenable (80550), SecurityFocus (BID 71739†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-48250†).
