A vulnerability was found in PHP up to 5.5.5 (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file REST.php of the component Cache. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. The PEAR_REST class in REST.php in PEAR in PHP through 5.6.0 allows local users to write to arbitrary files via a symlink attack on a (1) rest.cachefile or (2) rest.cacheid file in /tmp/pear/cache/, related to the retrieveCacheFirst and useLocalCache functions.

The weakness was disclosed 09/27/2014 by vladz (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at bugs.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-5459 since 08/26/2014. The exploitation is known to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation.
