A vulnerability was found in Citrix CloudPlatform 3.0.5 (Connectivity Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing of the file etc/cloud/management/log4j.conf. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a credentials management vulnerability. Apache CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating and Citrix CloudPlatform (formerly Citrix CloudStack) before 3.0.6 stores sensitive information in the log4j.conf log file, which allows local users to obtain (1) the SSH private key as recorded by the createSSHKeyPair API, (2) the password of an added host as recorded by the AddHost API, or the password of an added VM as recorded by the (3) DeployVM or (4) ResetPasswordForVM API.
The weakness was disclosed 01/10/2013 by Ahmad Emneina with Citrix as CTX136163 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at support.citrix.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-5616 since 10/24/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1552 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
It is possible to download the exploit at seclists.org. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
Upgrading to version 3.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
